First Flight of Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A Military Transport
The next generation Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A of Russian military air transporter has been deployed into test flight.
Modernization effort of original Ilyushin Il-76 has been done by Aviastar SP, Ilyushin Aviation Complex the subsidiary of United Aircraft Corporation.
Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A's flight debut took place near Aviastar SP facility near Ulyanovsk for about 4 hour and 20 min. The engineer and pilot checked all of aircraft behavior, engine performance and whole aircraft systems.
The Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A powered by Perm PS-90A-76 from Perm Engine Company. This engine is improved version of original PS-90A turbofan. The decision came after Ilyushin picked this engine instead of D-30KP engine. Perm PS-90A-76 is a powerful turbofan engine with two-shaft turbofan and high by-pass ratio promising performance yet fuel efficiency.
The aircraft is expected to be delivered to Russia's defence ministry in the end of 2014. Previously, maiden flight has been done in March 2013 and chain of flight testing will conduct in the next coming weeks.
The modernization of the aircraft in order to answer government challenge, they require inflight refueling capability and higher cargo capacity.
Beside the engines, Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A also equipped by new glass cockpit avionics and able to carry payload up to 60 tonne.
Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A designed for utility purpose, both civil and military purpose. The aircraft able to carry armed troops personnel, cargo, and heavy and large military vehicle lifter.
